How do historians study the past?
Historians use evidence from primary and secondary sources and oral histories to answer their questions. They have to choose what information is most important and trustworthy as evidence. Historical evidence is not always simple. Sometimes what historians thought to be true turns out to be false.

Historians typically do the following: Gather historical data from various sources, including archives, books, and artifacts. Analyze and interpret historical information to determine its authenticity and significance. Trace historical developments in a particular field.
Historians divided the past into periods based on the economic and social factors which characterize them. In doing so, they faced two problems. i) Economic and social changes kept taking place hence, boundaries cannot be drawn. ii) The medieval period is compared with the modern period.
The interpretation of recorded history often relies on historical method, or the set of techniques and guidelines by which historians use primary sources and other evidence to research and then to write accounts of the past.
A historian is a person who studies and writes about the past and is regarded as an authority on it. Historians are concerned with the continuous, methodical narrative and research of past events as relating to the human race; as well as the study of all history in time.
The most commonly recognised historical methodologies include: Palaeography (study of historical handwriting), diplomatics, the study of documents, records and archives, chronology (establishing the dates of past events), the study of publications, epigraphy (study of ancient inscriptions).

Historians classify the different types of evidence they use into four groups: Written Evidence, Oral Evidence, Visual Evidence and Physical Evidence.
Specifically, historians study older documents and artifacts and create an interpretation of the past for the public. Archaeologists excavate artifacts that both the archaeologists and historians study. Archaeologists also look at historical documents, but they typically use them for background information on a site.
Primary sources convey first-hand experience of the event or time period you're studying. Secondary sources convey the experiences of others, or “second-hand” information; they often synthesize a collection of primary sources.
Historians present their arguments in the form of a thesis statement, a clear and direct declaration of what they're arguing. For example, I could say ''A popular surge in the concept of Manifest Destiny is the primary reason for James Polk's election in 1844''.
In historiography, periodization is the process or study of categorizing the past into discrete, quantified, and named blocks of time for the purpose of study or analysis. This is usually done in order to understand current and historical processes, and the causality that might have linked those events.
Why do we try and divide history into different periods? We do so in an attempt to capture the characteristics of a time, its central features as they appear to us. So the terms through which we periodise – that is, demarcate the difference between periods – become important. They reflect our ideas about the past.

What should historians not do?
Do not wilfully present evidence out of context, especially not in such a way that the lack of context will render the meaning of the evidence different, unclear or manipulable. Do not cite evidence from sources that you elsewhere discount. At best, do not waste a reader's time on unsubstantiated sources.
While it is often remarked that "history repeats itself", in cycles of less than cosmological duration this cannot be strictly true. In this interpretation of recurrence, as opposed perhaps to the Nietzschean interpretation, there is no metaphysics.
Through history, we can learn how past societies, systems, ideologies, governments, cultures and technologies were built, how they operated, and how they have changed. The rich history of the world helps us to paint a detailed picture of where we stand today.

Lecture method is the oldest method of teaching. It is based on the philosophy of idealism. This method refers to the explanation of the topic to the students. The emphasis is on the presentation of the content.

These sources include eyewitness accounts of historical events, as well as descriptions written after events have taken place. Historians also study objects from the past. They find the things that past cultures have left behind.
Train students in the four key strategies historians use to analyze documents: sourcing, corroboration, close reading, and contextualization.
Archaeologists can estimate the age of fossils and artifacts through several techniques. Carbon dating measures the amount of radioactive carbon in fossils to place them in time. Age can also be determined by identifying the age of the layer of rock that the artifacts are buried in.
Historical thinking skills, or historical reasoning skills, are those that historians, curators , researchers, archeologists and others use to evaluate primary sources within the context of a specific time period or era. These skills include reading comprehension, analysis, interpretation and argumentation.
Archaeology. In the last century, traditional history has been helped immensely by the development of archaeology. Historians can more accurately date their sources to determine their closeness to an event, and access to human remains opens all new doors for analysis.
